The Major Crimes Division Wiki
NOTE: The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) featured in the Major Crimes Universe is fictional but it's loosely based on the organization of the real LAPD from 2005, the year The Closer premiered. As such, it's presumed that the organization of the Professional Standards Bureau is also mostly from 2005.

The Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) provides supervision and leadership to all of the department's internal investigations and reports directly to the Chief of Police.

Force Investigation Division[]

The Force Investigation Division (FID) is responsible for the investigation of all incidents involving the use of deadly force by an LAPD officer as well as all use of force resulting in an injury requiring hospitalization. Investigative responsibility of FID also includes all deaths while the arrested or detained person is in the custodial care of the LAPD, accidental shootings as well as animal shootings and other investigations as directed.

Special Operations Division[]

The Special Operations Division (SOD) conducts complex investigations which require expertise or resources not readily available to geographical areas or other divisions, or the other investigative sections of the Professional Standards Bureau.

Ethics Enforcement Section[]

The Ethics Enforcement Section is responsible for planning and conducting integrity audits designed to examine a specific employee or group of employees who have been identified through an investigative analysis as displaying symptoms of potential involvement in at-risk behavior or who are believed to be engaging in behavior that may constitute misconduct.

Internal Surveillance Unit[]

The Internal Surveillance Unit is responsible for conducting surveillance of LAPD employees committing criminal and/or administrative misconduct.

Internal Affairs Group[]

The Internal Affairs Group (IAG) is responsible for identifying, reporting, and investigating corruption and employee behavior that discredits the LAPD or violates a department policy, procedure or practice.

Avocate Section[]

The Avocate Section is responsible for reviewing selected complaint investigations; representing the department’s interests in the department’s administrative hearings; preparing, serving, and tracking of documents related to sustained complaint investigations; coordinating all administrative appeals involving discipline by serving subpoenas, and presenting testimony and evidence; and tracking and coordinating the monitoring of an officer’s compliance with the conditions of any rehabilitation agreements between the officer and the Internal Affairs Group.

Support Section[]

The Support Section is responsible for preparing charges against LAPD employees in disciplinary cases; submitting internal investigations to the appropriate prosecuting agency for criminal filing consideration; assuring complete, accurate, and objective investigations of alleged complaints by auditing complaint investigation reports; and maintaining liaison with other law enforcement agencies investigating complaints against LAPD personnel.

Administrative Investigation Division[]

The Administrative Investigation Division (AID) is responsible for investigating complaints of misconduct that are primarily administrative in nature.

Criminal Investigation Division[]

The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) is responsible for investigating complaints of misconduct that have potential criminal elements associated with them.
