Calling him a hero doesn't help us today, but that's how we'll end up remembering him.

— Deputy Chief Howard

Closing the Case[]

Doctor Joe takes the stand at Dwight Darnell's trial where DDA Barry Rosen objects to Dwight treating it like a therapy session from the outset, something that Judge Richwood concurs with and reprimands Dwight for, urging him to speak to his court-appointed attorney Marco Calderon for advice if need be. Observing the proceedings, Assistant Chief Taylor expresses hope to Captain Sharon Raydor that if Dwight "gives the game away here," he will be arrogant enough to speak to them after the proceedings and maybe even name the leader of the Zyklon Brotherhood.

Dwight questions Doctor Joe about how he was hired by the Pasadena police to study the murders and identify and/or locate a possible subject which Doctor Joe confirms. Doctor Joe admits that he speculated on Dwight's personality, but corrects Dwight that he did it by lumping him in with a lot of other murderers, not a lot of other people. Dwight begins trying to present the defense that the people he killed were part of an inferior race and thus were not murders, drawing the ire of both DDA Rosen and Judge Richwood with his attempts to claim the six adults and two children he killed were not humans.

Pressed by the judge to move on, Dwight asks Doctor Joe about how he had predicted that on July 26 of the previous year, he had predicted that Dwight would at one of twelve addresses in Pasadena targeting a married couple who Dwight feels were intent on diluting the purity of the white race. Doctor Joe confirms that they were able to narrow down the date and some potential targets of where Dwight would strike next to effect his arrest. Dwight confronts Doctor Joe about the fact that he is now on trial for his life because Doctor Joe took his individual nature and reduced it to a pattern, effectively shrinking it down to fit a generic profile. Though Doctor Joe agrees that that's one way of looking at things, he suggests another way is that Dwight just wasn't very original.

Dwight challenges Doctor Joe to use his predictive powers to tell the court what he is about to do in the next ten seconds. Doctor Joe watches as Dwight, having been holding the bag containing the murder weapon during the examination, fingers the gun more closely and turns a smirk on him. Realizing what's about to happen, Doctor Joe dives for cover as Dwight suddenly opens fire with gun, shooting Doctor Joe in the right shoulder, left leg and the head. As the courtroom breaks into a panic, Deputy Erin Simms tries to activate Dwight's stun belt to no effect. Dwight turns and shoots Simms twice in the chest, killing him and then shoots DDA Rosen twice in the back as he divers for cover and his attorney Marco Calderon once in the heart, killing them both as well.

As Dwight takes aim at Judge Richwood, Assistant Chief Taylor moves to shoot Dwight, but a panicked courtroom patron runs into Taylor, causing him to fire into the celling instead. Before Taylor can fix his ruined aim, Dwight shoots him twice in the chest. Before Dwight can target anyone else, Sharon shoots him three times in the chest, taking Dwight down. As Doctor Morales desperately runs to Taylor's aid, Dwight smirks at Sharon before passing out from his injuries.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Tao, Buzz, Julio and Provenza arrive to join the rest of the squad, dodging the questions of the reporters in the lobby. Sharon is comforted by Andy Flynn and Judge Richwood who promises to keep the jury sequestered and give her a list of their identities. Andy tells the judge that they will need a list of all the clerks and deputies who had access to the evidence because what happened had to have been a conspiracy, not just a mass shooting. A somber Doctor Morales reports that Dwight probably won't survive his wounds while he estimates Doctor Joe's prognosis to be 50/50. Doctor Morales offers his condolences for the death of DDA Rosen and Taylor who did not survive his wounds. Doctor Morales begins writing his preliminary reports in the courtroom so that they don't have to come to the morgue.

Andy asks Judge Richwood if he has any idea how the gun could've been loaded, but the judge admits that he doesn't know as the disabling wire is always checked before it comes into court by the DDA and the deputy. Julio discovers that the wire was cut and all Dwight would've had to do was pull it out which could've been done through the bag which the judge agrees is what it looked like had happened. Julio suggests that Deputy Simms and DDA Rosen only did a visual inspection of the gun instead of pulling it out of the bag and physically checking and so missed the cut wire. Judge Richwood comments that it wouldn't be unusual while Andy believes that they were unlikely to be involved in the conspiracy since they both ended up dead.

Andy suggests that Sharon wait in the judge's chambers which Judge Richwood doesn't mind, but Sharon decides that its best for her to remain at the scene of her action to wait for FID to interview her. Judge Richwood asks what Sharon wants him to do about the spectators and reporters that were present during the shooting, but Provenza interrupts to remind Sharon that according to the rules that she herself created, she is not allowed to take part in the investigation until FID interviews her. Provenza points out that nothing prevents them from continuing to talk around her or Sharon asking questions if she wants. Provenza decides that they will see the jurors and people from the gallery in just a few minutes before telling everyone that in light of the tragedy they have suffered, if anyone needs a break before working on the case, it is completely understandable. However, no one takes him up on his offer.

Tao reports that there are no fingerprints on the gun's clip nor the remaining bullet loaded in it. Sykes reports that the controls for Dwight's stun belt were jammed, resulting in Simms going for his sidearm too late after trying to shock Dwight first and failing. Julio points out that if Dwight's plan was to kill as many people as possible, he should've shot Simms first, leading Buzz to suggest that Dwight knew the stun belt was disabled and thus didn't have to target Simms first. Andy wonders how Dwight would've known that while Sharon brings up a few more good questions: who loaded and enabled the gun? How did Dwight know the gun was loaded and why did Dwight shoot Doctor Joe first?

Sharon and Provenza realize that Doctor Joe may have been the primary target of the conspiracy and Sharon suggests that they let the conspirators think that Dwight succeeded in killing Doctor Joe. As Doctor Morales offers his help in faking Doctor Joe's death, Lieutenant Comacho from FID arrives to interview Sharon. After turning over her gun, Sharon tells the other detectives that along with profiling Dwight, Doctor Joe had also evaluated Dwight's capacity to stand trial and represent himself. As Sharon leaves with FID, Provenza realizes that there is a record of Doctor Joe and Dwight's conversations though they are covered by privilege as long as Dwight is still alive. Doctor Morales promises that he can report Doctor Joe dead to the media, but suggests that they contact Doctor Joe's next of kin and warn them ahead of time and gives them his prelims with a promise to call if anything changes.

Provenza orders Tao to check out everyone who had access to Dwight's gun to see if anyone stands out as a suspect for who loaded it. Sykes is ordered to watch out for Doctor Joe who is to remain anonymous, protected and to the rest of the world, dead. As well, Sykes is to keep an eye on Dwight in case he wakes up at which point she is to talk to him. Provenza has Buzz grab the video from the entire courthouse to find out everyone that was there that day and Julio is to run parole and probation searches on every Nazi and skinhead including those in the County Jail. Julio suggests starting with Henry Colson as the courtroom shooting could be payback for what happened to Henry's father and brother the week before which Provenza agrees with. Provenza suggests that as Julio's foster son Mark Jarvis lived with the Colsons he might be able to identify some of the Zyklon Brotherhood who visited while Mark was around. However, Julio refuses to allow Mark near the Brotherhood members as even though Ava Jarvis' killer is dead, it hasn't stopped the violence. Julio promises to get a removal order for Henry to see if he had anything to do with the shooting before leaving.

Fritz Howard, now Acting Assistant Chief following the death of Taylor, holds a press conference where he confirms five fatalities in the courtroom shooting, including Taylor. Rusty Beck witnesses the press conference and is distraught to hear the reporters questioning Fritz about the reports of Doctor Joe's death while Fritz refuses to answer any questions aside from stating that what happened was a conspiracy against justice system and the people who serve it.

Julio reports that the parole and probation searches are not going well, but most of the gang members live in the same set of apartment complexes on the same city block which are all owned by the gang. Julio explains how the Brotherhood moves into a neighborhood, tries to scare off neighboring blacks and Latinos before the city steps in, condemns the buildings, pays off the gang and redevelops the site. Andy notes the similarities to the gang's other real estate scams and wonders how they don't know more about the Brotherhood. Julio explains that until recently, the gang preached white power while mainly selling meth in Los Angeles and guns in Mexico while the real estate issue surrounding their apartment buildings isn't really illegal. Provenza suggests getting a search warrant for the apartments to see if they can find the missing million dollars worth of weapons, but Julio points out that they would need warrants for every single apartment which they don't have probable cause to get causing Provenza to suggest getting the building condemned like the other Brotherhood properties.

Andy reports that Dwight had no visitors while he was in County awaiting trial and while he had a lot of cellmates, none of them were skinheads or Nazis. Tao reports that the gun was only signed into evidence a few times and Judge Richwood's clerk Jan Adamms was in charge of that who is currently on her to talk to them. Buzz plays the video of the shooting which everyone somberly watches, noting that Jan looks surprised. Unnoticed by the detectives, Rusty arrives in time to see the video as well and asks about the details of Doctor Joe's death, devastated by his friend's "murder." Though Rusty offers his help in any way he can with the tipline, Provenza asks him instead to wait in Sharon's office for her. Provenza reminds Rusty that they are all dealing with the tragedy of Taylor's death while Sharon has the added pressure of having to shoot someone on top of that. Provenza asks Rusty to wait for Sharon in order to be a source of strength for her as a way that he can help which Rusty finally agrees to.

As a confused Jan Adamms is interrogated by Provenza and Tao, Sharon arrives with the news that it went good with FID though she won't be cleared to work in the field until she meets with Behavioral Sciences the next day. However, Sharon is confident that she will do fine as she not only helped come up with the questions that she will be asked, but the answers to them as well. Provenza and Tao ask Jan about her six years of work with Judge Richwood which includes managing the evidence unless its locked up in a safe which she has the combination to. Jan tells them that all of the clerks know the combination and are careful with signing the evidence in and out, particularly the guns. Tao shows Jan the three signatures on the evidence bag she signed off on, two of which were DDA Rosen and Deputy Simms. However, Jan realizes that none of the signatures are hers and have been forged, pointing out that the last name on the bag is spelled Adams while she spells her last name Adamms. Sharon suggests that if Jan is right, someone could've switched out the evidence bags.

At Provenza's prompting, Jan tells them that there are about ten people working at the courthouse now who have the combination to the safe. Sharon has Tao ask if Jan is telling them that people who no longer work at the courthouse have the combination to the safe which she confirms, stating that the safe came in 2004 and the combination hasn't been changed since then and they get new court clerks all the time. Provenza realizes that a lot of people could've unlocked the safe and has Jan begin writing a statement while Tao enters the Electronics Room and tells the others that they need to go through county, state and sheriff's office employment records to find all of the people who could've unlocked the safe. Sharon orders him to start with all of the clerks that were at work when the shooting happened and to get writing samples from all of them while Buzz gets a call that Henry Colson has arrived. Sharon orders Julio to handle Henry's interrogation.

In the murder room, Provenza reports that he is getting someone to look at Jan's handwriting and is having her followed, but doesn't believe that Jan was involved in the conspiracy. Sharon continues to believe that Doctor Joe was the primary target while Provenza points out that if Doctor Joe was the target, he can think of a thousand easier ways to kill him. Sharon suggests that shooting up the entire courtroom was the best way to hide the culprits real intention of killing Doctor Joe before Provenza receives a call from Sykes at the hospital. Provenza reports that Doctor Joe is out of surgery and in recovery and though Doctor Joe's not completely in the clear yet, Sykes can talk to him soon. Also, they can now get all the records they want from Doctor Joe as Dwight died in surgery a few minutes before. Sharon takes the news well, asking what Provenza told Rusty about Doctor Joe. Provenza admits that he didn't tell him anything while Doctor Joe's fate was still up in the air. Though Provenza tries to comfort Sharon over killing Dwight, she tells him that what bothers her is not killing Dwight but the fact that she can't find a single part of her that is bothered by it.

Entering her office, Sharon tells Rusty the truth about how Doctor Joe is still alive, but to the rest of the world must be believed dead for his own safety. Sharon explains that a likely reason for Doctor Joe being targeted is that he evaluated Dwight to stand trial and Dwight may have said something during that evaluation that was more important than either Dwight or Doctor Joe knew. When Rusty wonders how anyone would know that Dwight said something important to Doctor Joe as the information would be privileged, Sharon realizes that its another very good question that they have to answer.

Henry Colson is brought in for interrogation, insisting that he has no idea of the rationale behind Dwight's actions as he had as little to do with Dwight as possible when they were both free and was never near him in jail. Julio and Andy threaten that if Henry doesn't cooperate, they will arrest some of the Brotherhood and then release Henry without charging him which could result in Henry's death. As Henry loudly protests that he only makes the meth and has nothing to do with the other actions of the Brotherhood, Sharon tells DDA Andrea Hobbs that the conspiracy is the work of a highly-organized mind and she can't figure out how it was accomplished yet. Provenza asks Hobbs to pay close attention for anything that Henry says that they might be able to use to get a search warrant for the Brotherhood's apartment buildings.

Andy finally gets Henry to shut up and tells him that he doesn't care about the drugs and arms dealing but he does care about the murders. As Andy starts listing them off, Henry calls DDA Rosen a Jew, Marco Calderon a Mexican, Doctor Joe a homosexual and Taylor a black guy as justification for their murders. Julio points out that Deputy Simms was white and Dwight shot him too. Henry is shocked to hear that Dwight shot Simms and insists that they are lying.

The detectives are shocked to realize that Henry knows Simms and wonder how. Provenza suggests that Henry knows him from jail while Tao explains that Simms was a trusted lifer with the Sherriff's Department who handled high-powered prisoners such as Dwight, replacing court baliffs during their trials. Sharon recalls that Simms handled the evidence and though Buzz reminds her that Simms was murdered, Sharon points out that Simms was also slow to the draw and the controls to the stun belt were jammed. Provenza realizes that Sharon suspects Simms of conspiring with Dwight in his own murder.

Julio threatens to send Henry back to jail with a note saying that he turned on Simms and seeing how the Brotherhood reacts, causing Henry to ask for protection before he says something else. However, Hobbs refuses to grant Henry protection in exchange for his help and decides that they will figure out Simms' role in the courtroom shooting some other way. Hobbs suggests that they start with a warrant to go through every inch of Simms' life before leaving with a comment how they are the ones who need protection, not Henry. Provenza reminds Sharon that Simms was law enforcement and a victim of the conspiracy, however, Sharon reminds him that someone loaded Dwight's gun and decides that this is a time when they need to gather their facts first and develop a theory of the crime later.

Sykes interviews a conscious but loopy Doctor Joe who tells her that Dwight was not legally insane, but had a massive persecution complex. Doctor Joe explains that Dwight claimed that he'd come up with the idea for his murders on his own which Doctor Joe admits felt true and committed them on the birthdays of famous Nazis which is partly how Doctor Joe was able to help the police catch him in the first place. Doctor Joe tells Sykes that while Dwight didn't tell him directly why he decided to murder his victims, in their third session Dwight had said that the Aryan movement was coming together under someone new. Sykes asks if Dwight had said that the Brotherhood had changed leaders and Doctor Joe confirms that while Dwight never admitted to being a member of Zyklon, always keeping his statements to generic Aryan, he did say that there was a new leader. While Dwight gave a name, Doctor Joe is unable to remember it. After confirming that Dwight is dead, Doctor Joe directs Sykes to the location of his notes and recording on his sessions with Dwight and points her to a specific portion of his third session with Dwight to focus on.

In Doctor Joe's session with Dwight, he claims that what he has done isn't illegal as they have no say in making their own laws anymore, the country is being divided up, the Aryans are getting less and less of it and his rights are being taken away. Dwight tries to blame racial quotas for why he couldn't get into college despite Doctor Joe reminding Dwight of all of his bad grades that actually kept him out of college. As Doctor Joe argues about racial quotas being non-existent, Dwight yells at him to read the works of Jordan Graff, a Harvard Law graduate, claiming that if Doctor Joe did, he would realize that the public school curriculums have been adjusted so white people do more poorly than minorities.

Dwight claims that Jordan is someone who is helping them to regain their fatherland. Dwight tells Doctor Joe that he knows Jordan very well, though Jordan is not his real father. Dwight claims that his real father should be recognized as a king in America, but Jordan always treated him like a son. Doctor Joe asks Dwight about his comment about his real dad as he'd thought that Dwight didn't know the man was. "I don't know his name, I'm not supposed to. But he is the real power behind our cause and I will meet him one day," Dwight states.

Sharon has the recording of the session stopped and asks why they haven't heard anything about either Jordan Graff or Dwight's father before. Julio reads from Doctor Joe's notes that he had believed that Dwight was probably trying to get attention from Jordan as he idealized him and seemed delusional on the subject of his father. Sykes reads that Dwight is estranged from his mother Wildred Darnell with Darnell also being her maiden name. With the recording of the session nearly at its end, Sharon has it resumed. In the session, Doctor Joe suggests that perhaps Dwight's father will show up for him at the trial and Dwight agrees that he might and Dwight can prove to his father that he was a worthy soldier.

As the session ends, Doctor Joe orders the deputy who was present to take Dwight away. The detectives are stunned to learn that there was a deputy present for the sessions, though Doctor Joe didn't note the deputy's name. Flynn and Tao tell the others that if it was Simms, it would be a big coincidence. Though they haven't searched Simms' house yet, they did get through his computer at work and his email account. Simms was having an affair with a court clerk named Hai Sun, a thirty-two year old Asian-American woman who had worked for Judge Norris for most of the previous year. Hai Sun had left work early before the shooting and hasn't been seen since. In a flashback to the end of Doctor Joe's session as he ends the recording, he shares a nod with the deputy who was indeed Erin Simms.

The next day, Tao and Buzz report that Hai Sun, in addition to leaving work early the previous day, has not shown up for work on the current day. She is also not at her home which they searched and Hai Sun's phone doesn't ping anywhere in Southern California and Hai Sun's car, luggage and cat are also missing. Though they have posted Hai Sun's picture with every police vehicle and alerted every train station and airport across the country, nothing has come up. In Simms' home they have found $150,000 in cash, property records indicating that he owns a 5,000 square foot residence in Cabo plus bank statements from Panama showing the account holder with over four million dollars in their account. Worse, Simms had three burner phones, one of which he used to call Ava Jarvis several times before she ran away from the Witness Protection Program with Julio's foster son Mark. Simms was also at all of the sessions that Dwight had with Doctor Joe and thus knew everything that had been said in them. However, Provenza reminds everyone that Simms was murdered in the courtroom shooting as well and points out that its unlikely that Simms planned his own murder with over four million dollars in the bank.

Though Sharon is currently at Behavioral Sciences for her interview after killing Dwight, Andy tells Fritz that he knows she would like to have a reason to search all of the Brotherhood's apartment buildings. Fritz tells them that he might have a solution for that problem and promises to let Sharon know when he has it all worked out, but they will want SWAT along just in case the Brotherhood uses all of the missing weapons that they are searching for against them.

Later, Fritz, Sharon, Provenza and Hobbs approach developer Martin Borja with Fritz telling the man that if he agrees to redevelop the Brotherhood properties, the city attorney's office will condemn them that day. Martin expresses reluctance given the fact that the last time he partnered with the Housing Authority on such a project, his workers were shot at during demolition and one of them was beaten within an inch of his life. Sharon reminds Martin that Major Crimes was not involved in his last run-in with the Brotherhood and promises that Major Crimes will coordinate with SWAT and SOB to ensure that safety is the first priority.

Martin expresses doubts about the LAPD's ability to protect him and his workers despite assurances from everyone, telling them that he's not worried about himself but his workers are also like his family and he can't risk their lives. Fritz tells Martin that the LAPD is already in mourning for one of their own while there is a million dollars in missing weapons out there somewhere that they need to find. If Martin refuses to help, the Housing Authority will need to find another partner that will take time in which the weapons could disappear. As Sykes brings Sharon a note that Dwight's mother wants to talk with her, Martin asks if he can wait until after they've made their arrests, but Fritz admits that it might be impossible without condemning the properties first. Hobbs points out that for search warrants, they will need probable cause for each individual in each apartment which is nearly impossible to accomplish. They also need to show up en masse to search everything at once or the Brotherhood will just move stuff around. Martin finally agrees to help them out.

In Sharon's office, she meets with Wildred Darnell who asks to see Dwight's body since she wasn't able to get to the hospital before it was taken away. Sharon apologizes, but Dwight's autopsy is still underway and she can't see him. Wildred is surprised that Dwight is undergoing an autopsy as autopsies are used to determine the cause of death and she knows that Sharon killed Dwight. Julio and Sykes explain that they need to know if Dwight was high when he shot up the courtroom and the pathologist needs to file a report before Dwight's body can be released to a funeral home.

Sharon admits that she wishes they were able to end the violence a different way and asks Wildred about Dwight's statement that he planned on meeting with his father, possibly even at the trial. Wildred tells the detectives that Dwight's father is a Marine that she had a short affair with when she was sixteen and he dropped her flat, showed no interest in Dwight and died in Iraq. When asked about Jordan Graff, Wildred is pissed as she doesn't want to hear more about Jordan and his movement and states that she doesn't know Jordan beyond the fact that he came between her and her son. Wildred begins blaming herself for ruining so many lives by being a terrible mother and Sharon asks her if she knew Deputy Erin Simms who managed Dwight's movement when he was in the County Jail. Wildred claims that she was too ashamed to visit Dwight in jail and leaves. Provenza brings the news that Martin signed the paperwork, the city housing authority has officially condemned the Brotherhood's properties and they are officially on their way to do safety checks to find the missing weapons. Sharon orders Provenza to take SWAT and wear vests, hoping that when they find the missing weapons, it will help them to unwind the conspiracy.

The LAPD begins evacuating the Brotherhood's apartments as the search is conducted to much protest from the residents while a hostile man approaches Andy and Tao, citing the Fifth Amendment as to why they can't be ejected in such a fashion. The man continues to argue with the detectives despite being promised that the Brotherhood will be paid for their properties at commercially assessed values. The man threatens to file an injunction himself to prevent them from taking over it, stating that he represents the properties and the owners. Fed up with the man's behavior, Andy has two police officers search him for identification, threatening to arrest the man for obstruction of justice as he continues to loudly claim that they are abusing their power under the cover of authority. Andy discovers from the man's driver's license that he is Jordan Graff, the man that Dwight identified to Doctor Joe as the new leader of the Zyklon Brotherhood. Andy has Jordan taken away to be questioned as Jordan yells that they are violating his civil rights by doing so.

While Jordan antagonizes Andy and Tao, Provenza, Julio and Sykes lead a door to door search of the building. Tao reports to Provenza on how they encountered Jordan who appears to be trying to practice law without any sense. Provenza orders Tao to see if they can get Jordan to talk himself into an arrest as they continue their search. Julio suddenly calls for Provenza's attention and he announces to Tao that he thinks they just found the missing weapons and orders Tao to send SID to the east wing of the third floor and to grab Jordan's fingerprints while he's at it. However, instead of being led to the missing weapons, Provenza is led to a room containing a corpse that he recognizes as Hai Sun, their missing court clerk. Provenza orders Tao to send Kendall instead of SID and to tell Sharon that they found Hai Sun and Sharon can meet her at the morgue.

Episode Notes[]

  • Zyklon
The Zyklon Brotherhood takes its name from Zyklon B (Eng: Cyclone B), a pesticide developed in Germany. Its principal component is hydrogen cyanide, which became a deadly gas when exposed to heat and water. Zyklon B was developed for use in pest extermination and similar applications, but became the deadly gas used in the gas chambers of Nazi Germany during World War II. Like many white supremacist groups, the Zyklon Brotherhood identifies with the Nazi movement as part of its core beliefs.
  • Given the later revelations, after killing all of his targets, Dwight apparently decided to go for targets of opportunity as he took aim at Judge Craig Richwood before being interrupted by Assistant Chief Russell Taylor. The fact that Dwight targeted Judge Richwood is never brought up again nor is he ultimately determined to be one of the targets of the conspiracy.

Buzz's Investigation[]

  • Buzz interviews Jennifer Edwards, Gene Hecht's alibi witness. Jennifer not only breaks Gene's alibi, but she further implicates him in the murder as she tells Buzz Gene wore a Swiss Army Watch like the one stolen from his uncle the next day. Buzz has Jennifer make both a written and video statement after speaking with her.
