Evidence[]

Closing the Case[]

Examining the body of Hai Sun, Kendall determines that she was most likely poisoned to death, causing Tao to comment that their last witness is now gone. Sykes suggests that Hai Sun loaded the gun for Dwight, forged the signatures on the evidence bag and then headed to the Zyklon Brotherhood apartment buildings to collect her reward. Julio agrees, stating that someone made sure that she never got to talk about it. Provenza points out that the same thing happened to Dwight and Deputy Erin Simms: everyone tied to the conspiracy ends up dead.

Tao states that he doesn't think Hai Sun was murdered there: while there is dried vomit around her mouth, there is none on the carpet that she is lying on. Julio suggests that some of the Brotherhood killed her elsewhere, rolled Hai Sun's body up in the carpet and dumped her where they found her. Kendall places the time of death as sometime not too late the previous night, but the room is too hot to get a accurate time of death. Kendall takes samples of Hai Sun's vomit in hopes that Doctor Morales can identify just what Hai Sun ate that poisoned her while Provenza is less than pleased by the fact that they have to search for the rest of the vomit.

Hearing yelling from the crowd outside, Sykes heads out to help Andy while Fritz Howard gets a call from Martin Borja who is unable to move his people in until the angry crowd of Brotherhood members is gone and is nervous as he is already getting threats on his life. Andy points out the Brotherhood's leader Jordan Graff who he states has no outstanding warrants and no criminal record, just a couple of arrests for civil disobedience and they can't hold him just because Dwight liked Jordan. Fritz tells Andy to convince Jordan that calm is in his best interests before heading off as he gets another phone call.

Andy and Sykes confront Jordan who is angry that the Brotherhood's home is being condemned, claiming that the police care more for "the advancement of blacks and border jumpers" than the people who helped to build the country. Sykes reminds him that her people helped to build the country too while Andy tries to get Jordan to curb his Nazi rhetoric and warns Sykes that things will get worse before they get better. As Andy faces off with Jordan, an apparently drunken member of the Brotherhood approaches demanding to be let back into his apartment. When Andy refuses to let him back in, the man tries to assault Andy and is arrested for it.

Sharon and Tao visit Doctor Morales who reports that there is no sign of a struggle or assault on Hai Sun's body and she did die of poison as Kendall suspected. However, Doctor Morales can't tell Sharon what kind of poison it was and suggests that if she could find a toxic agent somewhere on the property it could help to identify it. As Hai Sun didn't throw up her entire meal, Doctor Morales is able to identify what she ate, leading Tao to joke that it was "death by combo platter." Sharon notes that someone Hai Sun trusted fed her the poisoned food and asks if Doctor Morales can prove complicity. Doctor Morales states that he believes so before showing the detectives a small tattoo of a heart with a Swastika inside of it. The three are left wondering how Hai Sun could've joined the white power movement and Sharon asks how old the tattoo is which Doctor Morales states that it is over a year old. Sharon realizes that if Hai Sun really was having an affair with Simms, given where the tattoo was located he must've seen it several times. Tao realizes that Hai Sun really was a part of the conspiracy while Sharon comments that she is now another dead end in the investigation.

In RACR, Provenza reports that they may have a new avenue of approach to the case. As most of their best suspects are dead, they have returned to the living and began checking out their stories. Sykes and Andy report that Wildred Darnell lied to them with Andy having gone over the visitor's logs looking to see if anyone connected to Dwight might've talked to another prisoner. While Wildred never visited her son in the County Jail, she did often visit Jerry Vogel, a prisoner in the County Jail appealing an eleven year sentence for his third DUI. While Jerry is not a member of the Aryan movement, his DUI charge gives him a low-security status. As well, in exchange for protection, Jerry works as the Brotherhood's errand boy in County.

There is only a record of Wildred's last visit with Jerry with all of the rest of the recordings having been deleted. As the Sheriff's Department manages the recordings, its quickly realized that Simms was behind the deletions. Provenza points out the strangeness of the fact that Simms was obviously a member of the conspiracy and yet somehow apparently participated in his own murder which makes no sense. In the recording of the visit, Wildred begs Jerry to let her see Dwight as it has been nine months, but Jerry claims that Dwight doesn't want to see his mother and wants to stay strong for his trial. Wildred asks Jerry to pass a message to Dwight for her about how much she loves him and is there for him no matter what. Wildred asks for Jerry to get a message to her if Dwight changes his mind about seeing her. Though Jerry agrees, he demands to see more cleavage the next time Wildred visits or he'll leave without talking to her, disgusting the detectives watching the recording though Sharon notes that it doesn't sound like they were talking in code to her.

Sharon asks about the search of the Brotherhood's apartments. Sykes reports that so far, there is no sign of any weapons, meth, ephedrine or vomit from Hai Sun. Tao shows Provenza a list of the contents of Hai Sun's stomach which seems like Thai food. Provenza asks if Sharon would like them to give the building one last go-over for toxic agents that go with Asian cuisine. Sharon agrees, but decides to wait until the next day as they are all exhausted and she doesn't want any of them being unnecessarily exposed in "Nazi-land" that night. After everyone else leaves, Andy tells Sharon that he is getting Jerry Vogel a hall pass to visit them the next day. However, he reminds Sharon that if Wildred knows that Jerry is a Brotherhood errand boy, she is holding things back from them.

The next day, the man who attacked Andy is led into the Assistant Chief's office alongside SIS Lieutenant Chuck Cooper and released from his handcuffs. Andy is less than pleased to see the man due to his attack on Andy. To Andy's surprise, Fritz introduces the man as Detective Wes Nolan of SIS who has been undercover with the Brotherhood for almost six years. Though Wes is glad to be back with friendly faces, he apologizes for the circumstances which brought them about. Wes confirms that he has been undercover in the Brotherhood working his way up the ladder until the gang stopped dealing meth and selling weapons and pushing hate instead. Chuck explains that they had a great asset inside of the Brotherhood that they didn't want to waste by blowing Wes' cover when Major Crimes went after the Colson family. However, after the courtroom shooting, they decided to bring Wes in to reevaluate his role, whether he could do the most good back with the Brotherhood or working directly with the police. As Sharon has been cleared to resume duty, Fritz decides to include her in his decision on what to do.

Sharon asks Wes who the leader of the Brotherhood is. Wes admits that that has never been entirely clear. For two decades the principle shot-caller of the Brotherhood was Brian Schultz who Wes describes as Nazi-light and more interested in the money he was making selling drugs and guns than the white power business. After Schultz's death of a heart attack two years before, there was a bit of a coup and Jordan Graff shoved his way to the top "or at least that's what it looks like from where I am." Wes calls Jordan "a back-to-basics guy" who reemphasized ideological purity, held mandatory seminars in basic criminal law so that everyone could represent themselves in court.

Sharon asks about Jordan shoving his way to the top and questions who he shoved aside. Wes tells them that it was Hart Colson who expected to take over when Schultz died. While the Colson family were white power fanatics, they also understood how it was all funded. In contrast, Jordan doesn't care about the money so much which hurt Wes too as he was extremely close to a promotion under Hart and had to start over a bit. Andy asks how much Wes knew Dwight personally and he tells them that he only knew Dwight some as Dwight was one of Schultz's gofers who he didn't see much until Jordan came along "and started making true believers out of everyone."

Fritz asks Wes about his comment about how from where he is Jordan only looks to be at the top. Wes explains that the same could've been said about Schultz and it feels like there's a partner somewhere, "flying way beneath the radar." Chuck asks for a decision on what to do with Wes: let him keep his cover and gather more intel or pull him out and use Wes as a resource instead. Fritz suggests that with all of the mounting pressure, they use Wes as a resource. Wes objects, not wanting to throw away all of the time and effort he has put into his undercover assignment. Wes insists that he can push his way closer to the top, but Fritz points out that there was a conspiracy to shoot to death several people in open court and it slipped right past him. As a result, Fritz believes that the top is further than Wes can get.

Andy questions Wes if Jordan and Schultz's silent partner could be Simms, surprising Chuck who recognizes Simms as the Sheriff's Deputy that Dwight shot to death in the courtroom. Wes admits that he doesn't know and Sharon asks if Dwight had ever mentioned his father. Wes remembers Dwight bringing up the man, a Marine who died in Iraq that Dwight never met a couple of times and asks why Sharon is curious. Sharon suddenly announces that before they make a decision on whether or not to send Wes back undercover, they should check in with the primary target of the conspiracy: Doctor Joe.

Provenza visits Doctor Joe who, while still heavily medicated, is far more coherent than when Sykes had previously visited him for information. Provenza asks Doctor Joe about Dwight's comments about his father and Jordan Graff. Doctor Joe tells him that he didn't consider the comments relevant to Dwight's overall sanity, but Dwight had started out by telling him that his father was dead and then in the third session calling his father a king. When asked which it is, Doctor Joe points out that Dwight is no prince so real or not, his father is no king. However, fantasizing about an unknown parent's identity didn't make Dwight insane.

Provenza asks about the deputy present in every session and Doctor Joe tells him that Simms asked if Doctor Joe wanted him to stay and Dwight said that he didn't mind. Provenza questions if Dwight mentioned his father to anyone but Doctor Joe and because he was in the room, Simms, but Doctor Joe doubts it. Doctor Joe questions the relevance of Dwight's "imaginary father" and Provenza explains that they are still trying to figure out who is behind the conspiracy, why Doctor Joe was shot first and then Simms who may have aided and abetted it. Doctor Joe is surprised to hear that Simms may have been part of the conspiracy and questions if he missed someone. "A lot of people missed something. Possibly even me," Provenza admits.

Telling them that "the dead bodies keep piling up," Julio leads Tao, Sykes and Buzz to where he thinks they have found the poison which Julio calls "kinda gross." Julio's discovery turns out to be several dead rats near an overflowing dumpster though Julio believes that it will be hard to tell if its the same poison for sure as they are looking for vomit and rats don't vomit. Near the bodies of the dead rats is a bag from a Thai food place with another dead rat inside amidst the remains of the meal the bag held. Tao comments that the rats have apparently finished Hai Sun's last meal and fallen victim to the same poison that she did. Sykes identifies where the food came from as Ladies Thai Palace located about four blocks away from the name on the bag. Buzz offers to go check for security cameras which Tao agrees is a good idea.

After Buzz's return, Sykes shows the squad and Wes security footage of "the latest well thought out conspiracy:" ten guys ordering the exact same meal that killed Hai Sun at the Ladies Thai Palace. Wes confirms that he knows all of the guys in the video from the Brotherhood. Sharon remarks that they only have three living people that they can talk to about the conspiracy. One is Jordan Graff who, as Provenza points out, won't get much out of him because he's a lawyer. Another is Jerry Vogel who is currently waiting in the interrogation room and Andy suggests that Jerry might remember a message or two he passed to Dwight from the Brotherhood. Sharon agrees that its worth a try and sends Julio and Sykes to join Andy in talking to him. Looking at Wildred's picture on the murder board, Wes comments that two of the people they can talk to are Jordan and Jerry and asks Sharon about the third, Wildred.

In interrogation, Jerry confirms that he knows Wildred whom he calls "a foxaerella." Jerry confirms Wildred visited him several times, claiming that its because he has personality. Upon Sykes' prompting, Jerry tells them that he's known Wildred for awhile following his arrest. As Andy and Sykes question Jerry, Tao goes over Jerry's record and how his latest DUI included him sideswiping a soccer mom in a minivan and causing a kid to break their leg as a result. Jerry claims that Wildred has the hots for him and they will be together when he gets out of prison. When the length of his sentence is pointed out, Jerry suggests that he might successfully appeal it and get out early.

Andy questions if Wildred ever introduced Jerry to her son Dwight which Jerry admits that she did, calling Dwight "a real sweetheart kid." Sykes tells Jerry about how they watched Dwight shoot up a courtroom, killing their chief and a couple of good friends. Andy tells Jerry how everyone they've found connected to the conspiracy is dead while Julio tells Jerry that whoever is behind it is being very cautious about covering their tracks, cautious and violent. Andy and Julio tell Jerry that they know that he is protected in County and suggest that he does favors for the Brotherhood in return such as distracting Wildred Darnell so that she won't soften up Dwight before his mission.

The three try to convince Jerry that the Brotherhood will eventually turn on him but that in exchange for his help, they can offer him real protection. Instead, Jerry asks to be released, to have his record expunged and to be able to buy a car without a breathalyzer attached to the ignition. Sharon recognizes that Jerry knows something, but Tao predicts that if Jerry gets out, he will commit vehicular manslaughter within a year and Sharon assures him that Jerry won't get out. Jerry insists that he's not negotiating and he its an all or nothing situation. Jerry claims to know things that they want to hear and if they don't agree to his terms, he won't talk as he doesn't really care what the Brotherhood will do otherwise but the detectives tell Jerry that they will think it over and leave.

Knowing they need Jerry and his information, Sharon expresses hope that Jerry doesn't regret his decision and get himself killed as he could be in danger if they send him back to County. Sharon asks Wes if he would mind spending one more night as a Neo-Nazi to scare Jerry into helping them. Wes is only too happy to agree, promising to find some time to have a "chat" with Jerry. Sharon orders Wes to contact Chuck and get himself arraigned for a drunk and disorderly while calling Jordan to represent him in court. Provenza and Tao suggest that they round up the ten Brotherhood members from the security video and see if they can find a weak link who will sell out the Brotherhood. They also still need to question Wildred Darnell and though Provenza offers to do it for Sharon, she declines and decides to handle Wildred herself.

After seeking council from Father [{Stan Mayer]], Sharon personally greets Wildred personally at the elevator and tells Wildred that she recognizes the profound personal nature of Wildred's loss and her remorse for Wildred's grief as Dwight's sentence was discharged without a trial by his peers or his mother being able to talk with him first. Though Fritz expresses doubt about letting Sharon question the man that she killed, Provenza tells him that its Sharon's call and suggests that maybe Sharon can provoke Wildred into telling them something that she otherwise wouldn't.

Wildred suggests that if she'd been able to have just one visit with Dwight, they wouldn't be in their current situation. Sharon points out that nevertheless, they are in this situation and they need to get their facts straight. Sharon tells Wildred that Dwight didn't load the gun that he used in the courtroom but someone else did it for him in the white power movement. Wildred expresses disgust at the white power movement and tells Sharon that Dwight didn't grow up that way and although it sounds like a cliché, her best friend is a black woman and Dwight used to have friends of all different races and she didn't teach him hate. Sharon asks if Dwight knew Brian Schultz and Wildred admits that he did as Dwight used to work for Schultz part-time in high school. Schultz had a warehouse or something similar for construction supplies and Dwight would answer the phone, take messages and other things like that until Schultz died. Wildred insists that she never met Schultz who Dwight never complained about and asks if it was another example of her bad mothering.

Sharon asks Wildred about Jerry Vogel and she explains that Simms refused to bring Dwight out to speak to her but introduced Jerry as someone who talked to Dwight sometimes and could pass along messages for her. Upon hearing another link to Simms, Provenza acknowledges that Simms was indeed a part of the conspiracy and suggests that Simms could've been Dwight's father or uncle. Fritz agrees and suggests checking Simms' DNA against Dwight's to see if they are related or not.

Sharon asks about Dwight's father, the Marine who died without ever meeting his son. Wildred confirms this and tells Sharon that while Dwight had no father, her parents had helped out a lot with raising him while they were still alive and it wasn't poverty that led them to this terrible place. "You want to ask me what I did wrong?" questions Wildred. "Do you wanna ask me how I managed to raise a kid who grew up to do so many terrible things?"

Sharon refuses and instead asks about Dwight's statement to Doctor Joe that his father was still alive and should be a king in America. While surprised, Wildred tells Sharon that Dwight said a lot of stupid things over the past two years and had made up a lot of stories about his father as a kid and would always look for him. Wildred tells Sharon that all she could do was love her son and she still loves him even now. "You see a cold-blooded killer, I see is a little boy who made me Mother's Day cards and whose knees I bandaged." To Sharon's great relief, Wildred expresses understanding for Sharon having to shoot Dwight. Sykes gets a text that Jerry is ready to talk to them again and informs Sharon who asks for the name of Dwight's father. However, Wildred refuses to give it to Sharon, angrily insisting that "his father had nothing to do with it" before leaving.

A bruised and far more cooperative Jerry meets with the detectives, telling them that if they want his help they've got it. Now, he accepts that he will no longer get out of jail in exchange but insists he needs to be moved for his own protection. Jerry tells them about "a scary Aryan dude" who assaulted him on his way back to his cell, told Jerry he knew that Jerry had talked to the police and that Jerry was next. As a result, Jerry is willing to talk in exchange for two conditions: protective custody "someplace less Aryan" and two margaritas.

Jerry reveals that Simms had ordered Jerry to act as a go-between for Wildred and Dwight and that all of the Brotherhood members listened to what Simms told them to do. The detectives point out that Simms didn't order Dwight to murder him and ask Jerry who would've ordered that. Jerry doesn't know but suggests that it was probably the same guy who ordered him to act as the go-between for everyone in county: his lawyer, Jordan Graff who took on Jerry's appeal pro bono. After hearing this, Fritz offers to give Jerry three margaritas if he does what they ask of him.

In the Major Crimes conference room, watched in secret by the squad through a camera, Jerry meets with Jordan and asks for his help as Jordan's friends in County have been acting suspicious of Jerry since "Dwight went nutty" and are talking about what happened to Simms too. Though Jordan orders Jerry not to worry about that, Jerry tells Jordan that the Brotherhood knows that he talked to Dwight's mother which is only what Jerry had been ordered to do and informs Jordan that he'd seen Wildred there earlier and claims to worry about what would happen if Wildred had talked. "About what," asks Jordan. "Wildred Darnell doesn't know jack and when it comes right down to it, neither do you."

Jerry starts suggesting that Wildred knew about Jordan's plans and starts suggesting that Wildred may have known what Dwight was really going to do, annoying the detectives as they know that Jerry's increasingly pushy questions will have tipped off Jordan to what is really going on. Sure enough, Jordan begins to pack up his briefcase without a word and Jerry threatens to tell the police all that he knows if Jordan walks out. Jordan points out that Jerry doesn't actually know anything and suggests that Jerry seek out a different lawyer. Jordan threateningly tells Jerry to "seek protective custody" and departs wishing Jerry good luck with his appeal.

As Jordan leaves, Sharon, having received word from Tao that they have arrested the ten Brotherhood members from the Ladies Thai Palace video and have them in the hall, greets Jordan in the murder room. Sharon tells Jordan that they have just rounded up all of their suspects in the murder of Hai Sun, a court clerk whose body was found in one of his buildings. Jordan simply congratulates her and wishes her good luck in getting an arrest before heading out into the hall while Tao thinks they won't need luck. In the hall, Jordan finds the ten arrested Brotherhood members and Provenza asks him what he wants to bet that one of the men will remember their experience at the Thai palace better than he thinks. Upon seeing Jordan, the men stand at attention and Jordan tells Provenza that "I know these men. And I think you are in over your heads and have been for some time." As a smug Jordan walks past, the men all begin marching in place. With a final smirk at Sharon, Jordan departs in the elevator.

That night, Sharon tells Andy that she is no longer disturbed by killing Dwight, but also doesn't trust Wildred. "Detective Nolan said that Graff may have a partner and these murders have weight. A weight that I was having trouble feeling until today. So my question is who is that heavy? Of all the people we've connected to this case, who is that heavy?" wonders Sharon.

Episode Notes[]

  • The majority of the episode appears to be happening in the form of a narrative Sharon Raydor is telling Father Stan Mayer. This form of storytelling was previously used in “Do Not Disturb” and “Snitch” where the majority of the episode was portrayed in the form of a story Rusty Beck was telling to Doctor Joe Bowman.
  • The ten arrested Zyklon Brotherhood members' fates are not shown in the episodes beyond the squad questioning two of them. However, in a deleted scene from this episode, two left their fingerprints on the bag containing Hai Sun's poisoned meal, four had bench warrants for their arrest, one owed child support, one is wanted for questioning in Reno, Nevada, one had meth in his pocket when arrested and one was not wanted for anything and instead got to spend the night in isolation rethinking his friends. One of the two who left his fingerprints on the bag was Patrick Cox.

Buzz's Investigation[]

  • Accompanied by Provenza, Buzz once more interrogates Gene Hecht about his role in his father and uncle's murders. Armed with Jennifer Edwards' statement, Buzz demands the name of Gene's accomplice. After being threatened with the death penalty, Gene agrees to give up a name and to testify against his accomplice in exchange for remaining in his usual prison.
  • Gene identifies a man named Bill Jones as his accomplice, but claims to know nothing about the man. Buzz sends Gene back to isolation while Provenza informs Gene of Buzz's connection to his victims.
  • Buzz later informs Provenza that by searching the LAPD Library of Annuals, he believes he has identified the correct Bill Jones, a classmate of Gene's from high school with a juvenile record. However, Buzz is left concerned by the fact that Gene refused to tell them anything about Bill Jones beyond his name.

Trivia[]

  • Gus and Rusty watch the first Die Hard movie together which Gus promises is not violent as Rusty doesn't like violent movies. Die Hard is actually a movie with a great deal of violence.
