Closing the Case[]

As the rest of the squad and DDA Barry Rosen review the security footage from before Ava's disappearance, Provenza and Julio push Ava's son Mark for information. Initially reluctant, Mark finally explains that Ava had told him to wait in the car and that she would be back in a couple of hours, leaving him instructions on where to go to the bathroom if need be and where their money is located if he needs to use it. Buzz shows the footage of Ava walking into a dead zone with no security cameras between the corner and the next block and Andy theorizes that she got into a car.

At Sharon's request, Buzz shows him the footage of Ava's body being found three days later in a vacant lot in Lincoln Heights, shot multiple times in the face. At Sharon's request, Rosen explains that Ava was a key witness against Dwight Darnell, a serial killer targeting mixed race couples and in one case, their children in Pasadena in a quest to protect Aryan purity. Mark further explains that Ava's friends claim that the police want to keep them down and are race traitors and that there is nothing worse than a race traitor. Mark shows a belief that the Aryan race is more important than anything else, including the law or even America itself.

Rosen explains that Ava was helping him connect Dwight to something even bigger. Dwight is connected to the Zyklon Brotherhood, with the name being taken from Zyklon-B, what the Nazis used in the gas chambers during the Holocaust. Ava had been hanging around the Zyklon Brotherhood for about a year, claimed she knew a lot of people in the gang and that they had been using her in some kind of real estate fraud. However, Ava had refused to name names, give details or connect Dwight to the Zyklon Brotherhood until Rosen could prove that she and Mark would be protected. Rosen insists that he did protect them by finding them a great apartment in an out of the way area with sheriffs dropping in on them all the time. While Ava said she was ready to talk, she suddenly ran away and Rosen doesn't know why. Mark tells Julio and Provenza that there were more "Mexicans" in the area than in front of a Home Depot and they both hated it. As such, Mark was happy when they left and claims that living in their car was no big deal.

Rosen concludes his tale by sadly calling Ava's murder a tragedy. Sharon, stating that she takes the murder of witnesses very personally, agrees with the sentiment and asks if Ava's murder really hurts Rosen's case against Dwight. Rosen admits that for the murders it doesn't hurt his case, but without Ava, he can't connect the murders to the Zyklon Brotherhood which he knows inspired them. Rosen believes that if they don't stop the Brotherhood, they will cause worse to happen. Assistant Chief Taylor brings up the fact that Ava was living on the streets and wonders if Ava's murder had anything to do with the Brotherhood or was merely random due to her lifestyle and the fact that her body was found in Lincoln Heights which isn't exactly Aryan territory. Flynn and Sykes point out that Ava was shot in the mouth, indicating that someone thought that Ava was a snitch while Kendall's report shows that Ava wasn't killed in Lincoln Heights, her body was just dumped there. When asked for relatives they can contact about Ava, both Mark and Rosen have no answers with Rosen explaining that Ava was never sure who Mark's father was as she was "heavily trafficked" before his birth and Rosen has been unable to contact Mark's grandparents.

Tao interrupts with the news that they have the report back on Ava's car. As the meeting concludes, Rosen insists to Sharon that this case isn't just business as usual for a great many reasons and implores Sharon to keep him informed which she agrees to. Tao tells them that the car shows indications that Ava and Mark had been living in it for quite some time, but has found nothing to indicate what Ava was up to or why she was parked in that one particular spot. Furthermore, all of the fingerprints found on the car all belonged to Ava, Mark or other people who are not in the database. Though Ava's phone is still missing, they have her cell phone records which show that aside from the DA and sheriff's offices, all of her other calls were all to burner phones all of which are no longer active.

As a result, their best source of information remains Mark. While Sykes thinks that he would be more cooperative if they told Mark his mother is dead, Julio feels that Mark is not ready for that news and they would need to confirm anything that he says some other way. Julio gets emotional, reminding everyone that Mark's mother was murdered for being a witness and he doesn't want the same thing to happen to Mark. Sharon agrees to try to hold off on informing Mark that his mother is dead until her killer is in custody, but states that Mark needs to be more helpful immediately.

At Julio's suggestion, he, Sharon and Andy bring Mark the book Make Way for Ducklings which was found amongst Mark's stuff in the car and appears to hold significance to him. Mark is excited to see the book which proves to be his favorite and has a stamp identifying it as coming from the LA Public Library. When Sharon asks if Ava takes him to the library a lot upon seeing the stamp, Mark explains that the book was a gift from his uncle Henry from when Henry was little. However, Mark doesn't know Henry's last name. Mark explains that Henry, who he states is in the Army, is Ava's boyfriend and not a real uncle. When Julio tries to ask where Henry lives, Mark ignores him and Sharon takes the book back long enough to take a picture of the barcode on the back and she asks Mark for anything that he can tell them about Henry. However, Mark refuses to talk further.

Leaving the conference room, Andy is able to learn from the library that the last time the book was taken out was in September of 1999 by a Kate Colson who was thirty-four and presumably Henry's mother. Running Henry Colson's name through the database, Tao finds out that he has a record with three arrests for criminal threats, four arrests four vandalism and a conviction for assaulting a rabbi. Along with his convictions, Henry has tattoos of a swastika and the initials ZB. The squad realizes that Henry is a member of the Zyklon Brotherhood.

The next morning, Julio texts Andy to let him and Sharon know that while Mark is up, he refuses to talk about Henry Colson and they can't find Henry's home. Andy suggests that Mark might be more willing to help if he knew that Henry was responsible for his mother's death, but Sharon feels that it could also end up being so traumatizing that Mark shuts down permanently. As they sit down to breakfast, Rusty Beck makes a suggestion based on his own experiences: if the police had told him that they could find his mother at a specific location such as his uncle's house, he would've lead them straight there. Rusty's idea is to do the same sort of thing with Mark to find Henry Colson.

Though Sharon is initially reluctant, the squad implements the idea and Mark eagerly guides Julio and Provenza to Henry's house. The two dodge Mark's questions about why Ava hasn't called him and at Julio's prompting, he admits that other people live with Henry who probably won't like it if they stop by without calling. Mark points out Henry's house, but Julio has Provenza stop around the corner instead. Though Provenza wants to call in a warrant, Julio refuses to have it called in based off of Mark's statement because it endangers Mark's life to be a witness. Provenza reluctantly agrees to try to find a way to prove that Henry lives there without bringing Mark into it.

At the same time, Rosen informs Taylor, Sharon and Andy that the judge in the case flat-out rejected his continuance. As a result, unless they arrest Henry Colson and he's a member of the Zyklon Brotherhood and they can tie it to Dwight very quickly, the case will end with only Dwight being found guilty and Ava Jarvis will have died for nothing. Andy tells Rosen that if Mark can lead them to Henry's house, they can search it for Dwight's fingerprints and DNA. However, Taylor warns that this is only if Mark can lead them to the right house and association doesn't make a conspiracy.

Sharon gets a call from Provenza about how Mark lead them to the right house but how Julio doesn't want them to use Mark's name on the warrant. Remembering that there was a picture of Mark at recess in Ava's car, Sharon suggests that if they can find Mark's school nearby, the school might have Mark's home address on record. Provenza recalls Mark pointing out his old school near the house, but points out that as its summer, there might not be anyone there to help them but Sharon feels that its still worth a try. Sharon tells Rosen that they are "in the right neighborhood," but Rosen protests that he doesn't have time to wait for them to perform a door to door search until Taylor points out that Rosen doesn't have any better ideas.

Tao and Sykes return from speaking to the principal of Mark's old school with the news that she had no trouble remembering Mark or his behavioral problems. The principal was able to confirm the house Mark pointed out as Mark's mailing address which has gotten them a warrant without involving Mark, satisfying Julio. Mark agrees to stay in the car at Julio's request and asks him to tell his mother that Mark is there in return. Mark also warns Julio not to go into the back bedroom as Henry hates it when people do that which Julio thanks him for.

Accompanied by several other officers and Buzz Watson, Julio, Provenza, Sykes and Tao perform a search of the house, finding drug and Nazi paraphernalia, particularly in the back bedroom, but no sign of Henry Colson. Looking through the file cabinets in the back bedroom, Sykes finds business documents indicating that the Brotherhood are also into real estate. As Buzz films the room, he notices a hidden trapdoor opening in the floor and a shotgun poking out aimed at Sykes. Buzz shouts a warning, causing Henry to fire at him and miss. During the fight that follows, Henry is disarmed and knocked unconscious by Sykes and Julio who arrest him. Through the trapdoor, Tao finds a highly-combustible meth lab with a heavy-duty air filtration system. As a result, they are lucky that Henry didn't blow them all up when he fired at them. After Henry's arrest, Julio tells Mark that his mother wasn't at the house and thanks him for the warning about the backroom which they had needed. As the contents of the house are removed, a desperate Mark pleads with Julio to stay and wait for his mother to get there.

In the aftermath of the search on Henry's home, Tao reports that Narcotics estimates that the Brotherhood could clear $30,000 a week with their basement meth lab. Sykes reports that the files recovered from the house shows that the Brotherhood is involved in some big real estate scams. The Brotherhood is purchasing homes in the names of various women, probably girlfriends like Ava and then renting out the houses without ever paying a penny on the mortgages, ruining the credit of these women. Provenza reveals that including the three guns Henry had on him during his attack, they have found forty-seven guns in Henry's house. Julio also reports that Firearms Francine has matched one of the guns to Ava Jarvis' murder. However, while the gun has a set of fresh fingerprints on the clip, they don't match Henry Colson nor are they in the system which Andy takes to mean that Henry just had someone else load the gun for him considering that Henry just tried to kill several police officers. As a result, even without all of the drugs they found they have plenty to hold Henry on, aided by the fact that like Dwight, Henry insists on representing himself.

Andy and Provenza interrogate Henry, using the fact that they are the only white detectives left in their division and the fact that their boss is a woman to claim sympathy with his cause. When Provenza tells him that the attempted murder of police officers isn't a good thing, Henry claims that he didn't know that they were police and he was just protecting his property, something that he has a right to do. As the two attempt to push Henry to talk, he demands his phone call while Rosen arrives asking if they have found any connection to Dwight. Sharon tells him that they haven't yet, but DNA and fingerprint searches of Henry's house are still ongoing. With Henry continuing to demand a phone call as Andy and Provenza try to press him on the weapons and meth found in his house, Sharon decides to switch tactics and sends Julio and Sykes to rile him up using the real estate fraud and the fact that they are Hispanic and African-American respectively.

As Henry continues to demand a phone call, Julio and Sykes enter, pretending to have just found Andy and Provenza interrogating the suspect without permission and to have been sent to take over instead. The two taunt Henry with the fact that they are "the Latino guy and the black chick that kicked your ass" and ask him to help them save him from life in prison by telling them where they can find his "Zyklon buddies." Stating that they have some good leads on where they could be, Sykes reads some of the addresses from the real estate scam, suddenly catching Rosen's attention.

As Henry continues to demand a phone call, Rosen asks what the addresses are and is told how they are the addresses from the Brotherhood's real estate scam. Rosen reveals that the addresses are also where Dwight's victims lived, where he killed them. Tao realizes that Rosen is saying that the Brotherhood rented homes to mixed-race couples, stole their money and then had Dwight kill them, something that Rosen confirms. After Rosen figures that the Brotherhood must've been hiding their ownership in some way, Sharon explains that they were using the identities of the women whose credit they had ruined. Rosen asks for copies of the mortgage agreements and tells them that the agreements are the connection that he needs: the Zyklon Brotherhood lured the couples in so that Dwight could kill them, making money off of the couples in the process. Rosen feels that if he can bring this new proof to the judge, he might be able to get a continuance, but the judge will have questions that he can't answer and Dwight will be there and Rosen uses Henry's repeated demands for a phone call as proof of what he will be up against.

Rosen, Sharon, Julio and Taylor bring the evidence before Judge Craig Richwood who asks if they can prove that all of the real estate crimes can connect to the addresses in the agreements and if they can prove that the houses are purchased and owned by a person or persons directly connected to all the murders for which Dwight is standing trial. Rosen assures the judge that he can while Dwight counters that Rosen can't and is just trying to delay the court with irrelevant facts. Rosen insists that its relevant as it shows the pattern by which Dwight selected and gained access to his victims. Furthermore, it suggests Dwight's association with a known terrorist group. Dwight points out that he isn't being charged with terrorism and violently snaps at his court-appointed attorney Marco Calderon while Deputy Erin Simms moves to activate Dwight's stun belt if he fails to calm down.

Judge Richwood catches Dwight's attention and warns that if he wishes to continue to represent himself, he must abide by the rules of the court or the judge will rule him incompetent to represent himself. Dwight reluctantly calms down and apologizes to the judge. The judge asks Sharon if Dwight's participation in a conspiracy can also be proven despite the murder of the witness and Sharon explains that they had earlier that day arrested the man they believed could be responsible for that murder, Henry Colson, Ava's ex-boyfriend. Julio goes on to explain that while searching Henry's house, they found documented real estate fraud directly connecting Henry to Dwight. Taylor adds that while they are still processing the scene, it will take more than a day and Judge Richwood agrees to delay commencement of proceedings until the following Monday. Though Dwight asks to be notified of all evidence uncovered by the prosecution, Judge Richwood simply states that Dwight just was.

After the judge leaves the courtroom, Sharon catches Dwight's attention and asks him about Ava Jarvis. Though Marco Calderon objects, Dwight orders him to shut up and claims to have nothing to do with the death of Ava, stating that he didn't know her and was locked up when Ava was murdered. As well, Dwight states that he didn't know about the murder until Rosen informed him of it the day before and finds it to not be his problem. Julio states that they will find Dwight's fingerprints and DNA at Henry's house where Ava lived, but Dwight dismisses this with a "so what." Sharon tells Dwight that if they can connect his eight murders to a larger conspiracy, there could be other defendants on trial with him and his ability to represent himself could go away.

Dwight states that while Henry Colson may have been stupid enough to get caught, he will never testify against Dwight and they will need better luck to take down Henry's father and brother, "luck and maybe a tank." Sharon assures Dwight that they will get justice for their victim, but Dwight warns that justice won't save them and by the time that they figure that out, Taylor will be in charge to which Taylor informs him that he already is. The detectives realize from Dwight's comment about Henry's father and brother that they are up against more than one heavily-armed Colson. Dwight catches Sharon's attention and tells her to remember that just as she will do anything for her cause, so will he for his and is taken out performing a Nazi salute.

Inspired by Buzz's interrogation of Gene Hecht, Sharon announces to Henry that she will give him his phone call if he will tell her about his relationship with Dwight Darnell. Henry agrees, but asks for the phone call first. When Sharon offers him her desk phone, Henry refuses, believing the phone to be bugged. Instead, he asks for Sharon's cell phone and privacy from her and Tao to make his phone call who agree with Tao giving Henry instructions. As Henry begins dialing the phone, its revealed that Buzz has set up a trace on the phone and Sykes explains that having anticipated Henry wanting to use a different phone than Sharon's office phone, they wired up every line on the floor so that they could listen in. Taylor praises their work, but warns that if Henry calls a lawyer they must stop listening in.

As the squad traces the call, Henry calls his father and tells Hart that he has tricked the police into letting him use a safe line. Henry warns his father that Dwight is talking to the police which Hart expresses disbelief at. Henry states that the police had told him so and asks about how else the police would've found their house since Ava can't have told them. Hart tells his son that he doesn't have time to deal with this problem as, due to Ava, he is in the middle of moving a million dollars worth of weapons. Henry tells his father that if Hart had just given Ava the $5,000 she wanted, they wouldn't be in this mess in the first place and points out that they don't know where Mark is and Mark could talk too. Hart promises that they will take care of Mark the same way they took care of Ava, angering Julio. Hart hangs up, ordering his son to not call him again as Buzz and Tao are able to trace the call. Signaled by Buzz, Sharon has a police officer retrieve her phone as Henry desperately tries to erase the call log for his phone call to Hart. Sharon thanks Henry and promises to take things from there.

As Hart and Clint unload some assault weapons in a warehouse, the warehouse phone rings, surprising them. Though Clint suggests that it could be their boss, Hart doubts it as he can't understand why the boss would call them on that particular phone. Hart answers the phone which has Sharon on the other end. Sharon orders Hart to drop his weapon and surrender along with Clint and anyone else that may be with them. Spotting the warehouse surrounded by officers and snipers, Hart refuses, thanking Sharon for the warning and stating that he will see her in Hell before ripping the phone out of the wall. As Hart and Clint go to Plan B, Sharon warns all units that the suspects are armed and ready to die and orders them to be on high alert.

Donning explosive vests, the Colsons confirm to each other that they have no regrets and expect to be hailed as heroes one day. Hart crashes a van through the warehouse wall and drives at the LAPD while Clint and the LAPD exchange fire, neither side managing to hit the other. As the firefight continues, Hart gets close to the barricade of police cars before a SWAT sniper manages to shoot out the van's right front tire, causing it to swerve away. As the van swerves in the new direction, Julio is able to get a bead on Hart with a sniper rifle and shoots him in the head, killing Hart and brininging the van to a stop. As the police call for Clint to surrender, he cradles his father close and detonates his vest in a suicide bombing. Thankfully, the van came to a stop far enough away from the LAPD vehicles that only Clint is harmed.

In the aftermath of the Colsons deaths, Rosen admits that the operation has turned out to be a lot bigger than he imagined and is thankful that they stopped it. However, Andy informs him that they didn't. Hart Colson had told Henry on the phone that he had a million dollars worth of guns and they aren't at the warehouse. The Colsons had managed to move most of the guns before the arrival of the LAPD. They have no idea where the weapons went and Taylor recognizes that whatever else happened that day, they didn't find the person in charge. Taylor announces that he will have to attend Dwight Darnell's trial, feeling that there is still more trouble to come.

At the squad room, Doctor Joe Bowman is brought in to tell Mark Jarvis about the murder of his mother. Doctor Joe tells Sharon that he is familiar with the destruction that Dwight leaves behind him. Doctor Joe had ruled out Dwight's insanity defense as well as assessing Dwight's competency to stand trial and represent himself in court. Dwight has also called Doctor Joe as a witness though Sharon has lost her capacity for surprise in regards to Dwight. Sharon tells Doctor Joe about how much Mark loved his mother and Doctor Joe recognizes that for Mark to trust Julio in the long run, the grieving process must now begin and Mark has to know the truth. Doctor Joe promises to be as gentle as possible and enters the room to talk to Mark alongside Julio, watched briefly by a deeply sympathetic Sharon and Rusty.

Episode Notes[]

  • Sharon Raydor tells DDA Rosen that she takes the murdering of witnesses very personally. This is likely a reference to Rusty Beck and the threats and attempts on his life by Wade Weller for testifying against Phillip Stroh.
  • Unlike most cases, at least not ones with a second or more part to the episode, the case in this episode has no clear conclusion to it:
    • The Zyklon Brotherhood and Dwight Darnell storyline continues in “White Lies, Part 1”, “White Lies, Part 2” and “White Lies, Part 3” with all of the characters noting the lack of conclusion in dealing with the threat they pose at the end of this episode.
    • Ava Jarvis' actual killer is never revealed. The murder weapon is found in Henry Colson's house, but the fingerprints on the weapon don't match Henry or anyone in the system. Its speculated that Henry had someone else load the gun for him, but Henry's phone call shows that the Colson family was responsible. As Clint and Hart have no criminal record and their fingerprints are not in the system, the fingerprints presumably belong to one of them and they could've just as easily killed Ava with the gun instead of Henry doing it after they loaded it. Henry claims in “White Lies, Part 1” that he just makes the meth, further indicating that the killer may have been Hart or Clint instead. Additionally, Julio and Provenza state after the courtroom shooting in the same episode that Ava's killer is dead, further suggesting that it was Hart or Clint.
    • Furthermore, though a lot of trafficked Zyklon weapons are recovered in “White Lies, Part 3”, its never stated if its the million dollars worth of weapons that Hart and Clint Colson were moving before the LAPD showed up, most of which they had moved before their deaths.

Buzz's Investigation[]

  • Gene Hecht is transferred to the PAB to be questioned for his role in the murders of Buzz's father and uncle. Due to the case taking precedence, the interrogation is pushed back until the next day.
  • Due to Rusty Beck previously abusing the access he was given to the case, Sharon proves reluctant to allow him to witness Hecht's interrogation. Following some advice from Andy Flynn, Rusty makes sure he is on hand when the interrogation happens and Sharon agrees to let him watch on the condition that he reports on nothing that he witnesses.
  • Hecht is brought into interrogation by Buzz and Provenza. Due to his fingerprints only being allowed to use Hecht as a witness, Provenza and Buzz ask him about anything he might have witnessed that night before revealing that his fingerprints were on the bank card.
  • After Hecht refuses to give up the name of either his accomplice or the girlfriend he claims can alibi him, Buzz threatens to transfer him to Pelican Bay where Hecht will be amongst the most dangerous criminals in the American Penal System. Finally, Hecht names Jennifer Edwards as his girlfriend that can alibi him for the night of the murder. Buzz has him transferred back into isolation until he can check out the alibi.

Goofs[]

  • When Andy reads Julio's text at about nine and a half minutes into the episode, it gives the time the text was sent as 8:34pm despite the fact that its clearly morning time. It also states that the text was sent that day meaning that it wasn't just a text from the night before.

Trivia[]

  • Sharon's cell phone call list is shown to include Lt. Mike (mobile), Ben (San Francisco), Daniel (mobile), Lt. Steve (San Francisco), Ashley (mobile), Det. Joseph who is simply marked as having been on the phone with her the day before, Kim (mobile) and Brad (work). Henry Colson appears to delete the call log for Det. Joseph and Lt. Mike (presumably Tao) along with possibly some of the others before calling his father.
