Flynn and Provenza

Provenza is always going to be the curmudgeon and Flynn is always going to be the smart aleck.

— James Duff

Background[]

Flynn and Provenza episodes are annual comedic episodes that feature the antics of these two detectives. Written by Adam Belanoff, each episode features Flynn and Provenza in the middle of a case which has taken an absurd twist: an extra body in a coffin, the scheming wife of a used-car lot owner with a yen for Provenza, a would-be detective always one step ahead of them, or a self-proclaimed spiritual advisor with a fondness for money, all lead Flynn and Provenza a merry dance while the squad tries to solve the case and clean up the damage.

The annual Flynn and Provenza episodes began in season two, which had the theme "partnership." Adam Belanoff, who joined the writing team that season, proposed a lighter episode featuring the Flynn and Provenza partnership as a way of developing the theme as well as the two characters. The episodes also served to exploit actor GW Bailey's comedic talents while lightening up the previously adversarial Flynn character. Two baseball jackets and one body in Provenza's garage later, and a tradition was born.

The action is generally driven by some situation in which Provenza finds himself: an unknown woman's body in his garage, a trunk load of evidence stolen by gang members or the opportunity to make a little money on the side as a process server. Flynn is soon sucked into the mayhem, and serves as Provenza's straight man. Occasionally, another character becomes involved as well, notably Chief Pope in "Tapped Out" or Buzz and his equipment in "To Serve with Love."
